Patel, 48, said she is a lifelong Democrat who has lived in Rancho Peñasquitos with her husband and three daughters since 2010. She is the daughter of immigrants who moved to California when she was a teen. After losing her mother suddenly at age 14, Patel was drawn to the medical and health research fields.

She earned a bachelor’s in biochemistry at Occidental College and a Ph.D. in biophysics from the University of California, Irvine. She worked in the biotechnology research field on autoimmune disease targets and developed therapeutics to fight cancer.

After leaving her biotech career several years ago Patel said she wanted to find other ways to give back to her community.
