San Diego holds a special place in Dr. Jennifer Campbell’s heart. She fell in love with the city the first time she visited thirty years ago and promised herself she would live here one day.
When she sold her medical practice in Pittsburgh, she settled in here in San Diego. Since then, she has become an active member of our community: teaching, volunteering on civic projects, working with charities, and serving on the Board of Directors for the Clairemont Town Council. She decided to run for City Council to bring some much needed responsible, intelligent leadership to San Diego. Dr. Jen will be the Doctor on Call to Fix City Hall.
Born and raised in Colorado, Jen grew up with the values of working class family. Her father was a machinist and her mother a homemaker, secretary, and community volunteer. They showed Jennifer the value of citizen involvement in our democracy and how government affects people’s daily lives.
Dr. Jen attended public schools and studied history at George Washington University in Washington, DC, where she became active in the Civil Rights Movement and marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. She got married, had two daughters, and once her children became school-aged, Dr. Jen decided she wanted to become a doctor.
At the time, women had limited career choices and studying medicine was not common. That didn’t stop her and she studied hard and fought for her place at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. In her first year, she became a single mother but carried on with her education, raising her children, and earning her medical degree.
Dr. Jen is passionate about taking care of people of all ages and generations, which led her to choose Family Medicine. For twenty-four years, she practiced, caring for thousands of patients while also teaching medical students and residents. When she moved to San Diego, she continued to teach Integrative Medicine to Doctoral and Masters level students for the past 12 years, only retiring in December of 2017.
Dr. Jen has been an active member in the San Diego community since she arrived, serving in many capacities in the San Diego County and California State Democratic Party, on the Board and as interim Executive Director of The Human Dignity Foundation, and helping direct grassroots organizing for community projects throughout the city.
Dr. Jen resides in the Bay Ho neighborhood of Clairemont. She and her partner Suzanne share six children, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
